View Il Grande prato in an enlarged map

From the northeast: Autostrada A1 south exit Fienze Scandicci then take the “superstrada” (=no pay highway) Firenze-Pisa-Livorno (FI-PI-LI) exit La Ginestra and follow signs for Montespertoli and then for Castelfiorentino. Once in Castelfiorentino continue onto the fly over bridge in the direction of Certaldo and at the first traffic light, where on the left there is a small business called Shellbox, turn right toward RENAI from Via del Vallone. Follow the road signs for Renai and the yellow signs for IL Grande prato—roughly 2 km of paved road followed by about 2km of dirt road.

From the northwest (Liguria and Piedmont): Autostrada la CISA to Pisa Airport, then the no pay “superstrada” FI-PI-LI (NOT the autostrada!) toward Firenze. Exit Empoli Ovest and from there on the provinciale road straight for about 15 km toward Siena to Castelfiorentino. From there follow signs for Renai and Il Grande Prato (see the exact description written above).

From the south (below Arezzo): Autostrada A1 north exit Bettolle toward Siena, then the no pay “superstrada” Siena-Firenze. Exit Poggibonsi and follow the provincial road for about 20km, pass Certaldo and another 10 km to Castelfiorentino. From there follow signs for Renai and Il Grande prato as written above.

With a satellite map quest: look for the postal code (“cap”) 50051 Castelfiorentino, Via del Vallone or Via Renai 11 or “Il Pero”.

By train: There is a local train station in the town of Castelfiorentino, 3.5 km from Grande prato on the Firenze-Siena line. Every half hour trains leave Firenze going through Empoli to Siena. From the central station in Firenze (Santa Maria Novella=SMN) the train takes 45 min.

By plane: The closest airports are those of Firenze and Pisa. Both are international, Pisa is now transatlantic. At the airports you can rent a car or take the shuttle to the central train stations (about a 20 min ride). At the Pisa airport there is even a train station in the airport from which you can go directly to Empoli, and change to a train for Castelfiorentino, the whole trip taking about an hour.
